Hey, my name is Alex Fernandez.
I’m a Business Administration and Management Major, and my pronouns are He/Him.
After reviewing the syllabus and attending the first class, my impression of ENGL 21002 is that this course will challenge me to rethink what research and writing mean. Rather than relying only on traditional academic sources, the course emphasizes ethnography through observation, listening, and reflection. What stands out to me most is how research can be conducted outside libraries and databases through observing everyday human behavior and lived experiences.
I have used observation and reflection informally through my experience working in retail and my work with youth at my church. In retail, working in a customer-driven environment taught me how important it is to read people, recognize behavioral patterns, and adjust my communication based on different needs and expectations. Working with youth has strengthened these skills in different ways by requiring patience, leadership, and an understanding of my audience. In both settings, I’ve learned that effective communication depends on listening carefully, paying attention to unspoken cues, and being aware of group dynamics. Reflecting on these experiences has helped me become more adaptable and intentional in how I engage with others.
I was born and raised in NYC, which has naturally shaped how I observe and engage with different communities. Being surrounded by people from Diverse backgrounds has made me more aware of how culture influences behavior, values, and interactions in everyday spaces. I also keep an open mind when people share their interests, life stories, or perspectives. This mindset comes from my personal interest in philosophy, which has encouraged me to listen thoughtfully while applying my own critical thinking. Additionally, my love for many different kinds of music has made me more aware of how culture is expressed through art and sound, often reflecting shared histories, emotions, and identities.
What excites me most about this course is the opportunity to apply these skills through projects like the cultural profile interview and the digital community ethnography. I’m looking forward to developing a more intentional way of observing the world and strengthening my writing through thorough reflection as the semester progresses.

Hey Alex,
I like how you explain the fact that you needed to recognize behavioral patterns everyday in order to be successful in your retail job. In a retail job you are always exposed to different kinds of people which fosters communication responses based on the behavior patterns that you are receiving.
