When I initially saw the syllabus, I was immediately intrigued by the different genres of writing presented in our upcoming assignments. As someone freshly out of high school whose entire academic career revolved around the publication of shorter news articles, I’ve always been challenged more in the analytical department of writing. As much as I love to write in all sorts of genres and ways, I struggle immensely in deepening the content I wish to present. With this course, I hope to not only learn more about writing in a different style, but to broaden my perspective on social issues that I’ve been previously ignorant to. I must admit, knowing that I’d be challenged as a writer was not exciting at first. Despite this, I’m looking forward to honing my current skills and developing new ones!
As someone who was fortunate enough to grow up in the diverse gem of Queens, I’ve observed and interacted with a myriad of different cultures and backgrounds. I currently work part time with children and I not only have to interact with them while keeping their age in mind, but their genders and upbringing as well. Children can be extremely hard to understand, but observing and seeing how they interact with their families, peers, and strangers can help me provide them with what they need. It’s crucial to keep a careful eye on kids, and forming relationships with them and their parents helps immensely in my work. Certain families have traditions and rules they follow, and we learn to communicate to ensure these wishes are being met. When we can’t grant certain wishes, we find alternatives that fits in everyone’s box of expectations, giving everyone a more enjoyable experience.
I’m personally extremely excited to engage in the second major essay. Studying human behavior and communities is extremely interesting to me, and while digital communities don’t exactly fit into the career path I hope to go down, I’m looking forward to dive deeper into smaller internet communities. I can’t wait to see what this course brings me!
