Class Introduction!

Hi, my name is Godner Alexandre. My intended major is Business administration & management, and my preferred pronouns are He/Him.

My first impression of this class was that it would be very helpful for me. After reviewing the syllabus and attending the first class, I think this course will give me an opportunity to get better at my writing skills in a way that is kind of connected to social sciences I’ve taken a couple of English courses before, including Writing for the Humanities and Arts, so I can say that I’m  familiar with writing that focuses on analysis, reflection, and building strong arguments. What excites me about Writing for the Social Sciences is the chance to apply those same skills but toward observing people, communities, and behaviors. It feels like a step further into writing that not only analyzes but also documents and interprets lived experiences.

I don’t really like groups like that but I’ve had a few moments where I used observation and reflection to understand groups better. For instance, when I was working on a group project in a previous class, I noticed how people’s personalities came through in how they contributed, some were very direct and vocal, while others preferred to quietly research and share ideas when asked.

One community I observe closely is the Haitian community which is my community. I’ve noticed that whenever something serious happens, whether it’s a tragedy or a crisis, people immediately come together to support each other. This can take the form of prayer groups, fundraising, or simply checking in on one another. What stands out to me is how quickly the community mobilizes, often without needing formal organization, it feels natural.

Overall, I’m looking forward to practicing how to observe people, getting better at writing about my thoughts, and learning how to explain social behavior in a way that is clear and easy to understand, so I’m really excited for that.
